Charity warns growing debt is leaving Scots without basics | |||||
| Stephen Cowan, Yuill + Kyle´s managing partner, was interviewed yesterday by STV News, following the Citizen´s Advice findings which are seen below and are documented in the STV News website. According to Citizens Advice Scotland, average personal debt has increased by about 50% to £20,193 in just five years. A growing level of debt is forcing some people to go without food or heating to enable them to pay off their bills. The warning comes from a leading charity which claims some people are having to take desperate measures to cope with mounting financial pressures. According to Citizens Advice Scotland, average personal debt among its clients has increased by about 50% to £20,193 in just five years. A report by the charity entitled Drowning in Debt found that one in ten people who sought help for debt were more than £50,000 in the red. Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Scotland, Kaliani Lyle, said: "The recession has hit people badly, making things even worse for those on low incomes, and plunging many others into financial hardship for the first time. The result is that debt has become a sad reality for too many Scots." The report, which was based on 273 individual cases, showed that 40% - including half of all women - were going without essentials to manage their debt. The number was up from 33% five years ago. Ms Lyle said people were turning to credit cards and loans to tackle their situation which could lead to a spiralling of massive debts. "The news that lenders are becoming more aggressive in pursuing late payment is very worrying, and it is tragic to see people say that they are suffering ill health as a result, and that they are even foregoing meals or switching off their heating to save money. "These are real people, living in every single community in Scotland." Citizens Advice called on governments in Westminster and Holyrood to tackle the issue by introducing tighter regulation on creditor behaviour. Ministers were also urged to improve legal protection for people who complain they are being harassed. During the STV News interview, Yuill + Kyle´s managing partner, Stephen Cowan, was featured as stating: "It really is only those who can pay a debt that we´d be interested in pursuing, and I think any responsible creditor would be interested in pursuing, not those who cannot pay a debt."
